Dan and Louise DeRusseau - Egyptian Arabians - Arabians Ltd.

Dan and Louise DeRusseau

Ten years ago, Louise and Dan DeRusseau started an Egyptian Arabian breeding business with 1 young filly. Today, from its small farm outside Austin, TX, LD Arabians has bred foals who now live in Egypt, Belgium, and Switzerland as well as across the United States. Their foals have won championships at the Egyptian Event and have earned acclaim from international trainers. Their story is one of dreams come true and goals achieved!

Neither Dan nor Louise grew up with horses, but both have always loved them. In the late 1990s, Louise saw an ad in the Austin, TX newspaper for an Arabians Ltd. farm conference and was intrigued. She held onto it for years, until she finally decided to get in touch with the farm and attend a farm conference in 2001. Her meeting with our Egyptian Arabians was love at first sight, and within a few months, Louise and Dan started preparing their property to bring their first horse home, a bay gelding named Thee Sama (Thee Infidel x Thee Jessenia by Thee Desperado). The couple decided that they wanted to raise their babies themselves, so Louise started learning everything she could about how to take care of, train and ride horses, and she worked with Thee Sama to put him under saddle.

As her comfort level went up, Louise discovered a natural love for teaching young horses, and LD Arabians bought its first future foundation mare, the yearling filly Alia Amal LDA (Tcheser Billa Bay x Rhapsody In Black). Within a year, they added another filly, then another, and today, their herd also includes the only two living daughters of Bint Bint Magidaa, Illa Magidaa LDA and Il Bint Magidaa, both by Thee Desperado, one of Il Bint Magidaa’s daughters, Magidaat Al Gamal LDA (by Mishaal HP), and Minstris Petunia LDA, one of only two MC Alexsis daughters in the world (The Minstril x MC Alexsis).

The DeRusseaus have been very hands on with all of their mares and foals, choosing not to show them, but rather to put them under saddle and train them themselves, a tradition they’ve carried on to each of their foals. Dan continues his career at the corporate headquarters of organic grocer Whole Foods, and Louise, who retired from Whole Foods, spends her days with the horses who live in their backyard, snuggling up with them at naptime or playing with them in the pasture. Their love of natural living extends to their practices of horsekeeping, too. One of Dan’s greatest joys has been watching Louise discover her passion and work with their foals day to day.

Louise and Dan credit their success to following what they say is the best advice they received from Arabians Ltd. when starting out, “Buy the very best mares you can afford as your broodmares.”

From their small farm in Cedar Creek, Texas, they have sold horses to fans of their breeding program all over the world. Breeder Nayla Hayek of Switzerland now owns 2010 Egyptian Event Futurity Champion Noor Magidaa LDA (Mishaal HP x Illa Magidaa LDA by Thee Desperado) as well as yearling filly Gameelah LDA (Thee Desperado x Magidaat Al Gamal LDA by Mishaal HP). Noor’s full blood sister Amal Magidaa LDA (Mishaal HP x Il Bint Magidaa by Thee Desperado) was also a Futurity Champion at the 2010 Egyptian Event, a show that the DeRusseaus mention as one of the highlights of their career as breeders.

Louise and Dan have made new friends around the world with each sale of their babies, as every new owner keeps in touch with them. They have been named Arabians Ltd. Clients of the Year, Breeders of the Year, and have received our Special Appreciation Award for their contributions to our business and family.

In 2011, their mares are expecting 4 foals, sired by the stallions to which they own lifetime breedings, Thee Desperado and Mishaal HP, and the DeRusseaus look forward to welcoming this new group of babies–their favorite part of the business!
