Dash Crofts’ voice is one of the most identifiable sounds in soft rock music. As partner in Seals & Crofts, he recorded a string of chart-topping hits throughout the 70′s, among them Summer Breeze, Diamond Girl, Hummingbird, We May Never Pass This Way Again, and Get Closer. All told, Seals & Crofts released over 19 gold and platinum albums, two of which went triple platinum. Their music fused rock, jazz, country, and classical influences with ethereal and poignant lyrics that earned them a wide and devoted following.
As of this writing, Dash Crofts and his wife, Louise, have returned to his Texas roots. His Great Grandfather established a 5000 acre ranch in what is now known as the Hill Country of Texas in the 1870′s. Growing up, Dash spent his summers on the ranch helping his dad and uncles round up some of the first Black Angus cattle in Texas on horseback and sleeping under the stars. He says those were some of the happiest times of his life. The family still owns 1300 acres of that ranch, which is plenty of room to raise and breed straight Egyptian Arabian horses. Having toured for approximately 30 years, Dash is content with his new life on the ranch and in the horse business. He is no longer in the music business full time. However, he occasionally gets together with his music partner, Jimmy Seals, for a project and devotes a portion of his time to their music publishing company.
Louise is the “horse person” at Crofts Haven Arabians; however, Louise assures us he does try to help with the chores. She became interested in Arabian horses at a very early age. At 5, she went to summer camp at Equitation Lodge, near her home in upstate New York. From that time on, horses became a full time obsession. Her first horse was a 3/4 Arabian that she owned for about 5 years in her late teens and early 20′s. Purchased as a two year old, the filly was trained and started under saddle by Louise and they spent many hours trail riding, jumping and learning a little bit of dressage. She was forced to sell her mare when her family moved to Tennessee. Years later she met and married Dash and they decided to become involved with horses again. They started out looking for riding horses and found a Polish – Crabbet mare and a national show horse mare. Then they found and fell in love with an Arabian gelding sired by Apollo Bey and added him to their herd.
Dash and Louise first attended a Farm Conference in 2002 and visited the farm several times over the next few years until they found the special fillies that they just had to have. In 2005, while attending a showing of the “kindergarten babies,” they saw the beautiful young chestnut, Liberty Belle CHA (Thee Desperado x Liberty HG) and her grey running partner, Moonlight Mishaa (Mishaal HP x Moonlight Sonataa). With these two future foundation mares, they officially established Croft Haven Arabians, and in April of 2006 they came and loaded the girls on the truck to join the herd in the Texas Hill Country.
The Crofts welcomed their first filly they bred, a grey out of Moonlight Mishaa and by Thee Desperado, in 2010!
